ESP Consulting supported EDF Energy throughout the CMA review of the GB Energy market. This support took a number of forms including:

• Supporting EDF Energy’s response to the Ofgem investigation that immediately preceded the CMA Review;
• Analysing the costs and benefits to GB as a whole of vertical integration in the energy sector – leading to a detailed report for presentation to the CMA; and
• Providing a senior expert in UK competition proceedings to advise and support EDF Energy throughout the review.

We supported EDF Energy through the initial determination of the Default Tariff Cap for the supply of Electricity and Gas in Great Britain. In determining this cap, Ofgem created a number of spreadsheet models to represent the costs of energy retail Some of these were placed in a “disclosure room” for scrutiny – subject to stringent confidentiality conditions. ESP Consulting reviewed those models on behalf of EDF Energy. We highlighted a number of anomalies and modelling errors, as well as specific issues with the assumptions underlying the models.
